Casita Gear
15 Amp Male to 30 Amp Female Dogbone electrical adapter (necessary) – $20
Useful if you plan to plug into a standard home outlet.
50 Amp Male to 30 Amp Female Dogbone electrical adapter (necessary) – $25
Useful if you are at a campground with only a 50 amp option.
Flame King Propane Tank Gauge (necessary) – $14
Definitely recommend having a propane tank gauge instead of just guessing. Don’t want to get caught low on propane.
Camco RhinoFLEX 20-Ft Camper/RV Sewer Hose Kit (necessary) – $56
Throw out the cheap sewer hose that comes with the Casita, I hated using it. This Camco one is so much easier to put together.
RV Door Window Shade (Necessary) – $24
We use this on the door to blackout the window at night.
Exterior
Folding Chairs (Necessary) – $30
We got these small foldable chairs. They’re low to the ground but pack up small and take up little room in the truck.
Camper Leveler 2 Pack (Necessary) – $70
We got these levelers as opposed to the blocks, as we’d seen these were easier to use. So far they’re great. The longer part is rubberized and the small chocks are plastic.
Outdoor Cooking Table – $100
We got this outdoor cooking table on sale for $80. Liked the idea of having different shelves for items, rather than have everything on one long table.
Portable Camping Grill – $25
We have this little folding grill for when we want to cook over the fire but we’re not at a campground with a dedicated fire pit.
CGEAR Original Sand-Free Outdoor Rug Camping Mat 12×12 – $140
This was the best outdoor mat we could find. We plan to spend a ton of time outside, so it’s worth it to get a better quality mat.
Security
Master Lock Shackle – $13
This goes in a hole to prevent the coupler latch from being opened. We paired it with the trailer hitch lock below.
Master Lock Trailer Hitch Lock (Necessary) – $30
This hitch lock is sturdy and well made. Makes us feel secure nobody is going to easily be able to remove it. We combine that with the shackle lock above. I like having both but if you only choose one I’d say to get the trailer hitch lock.
Apple AirTags (Necessary) – $75
In addition to the locks, we also got a 4 pack of AirTags. We keep one hidden in the trailer so we’re alerted if it gets moved. There are deals on them every so often and we got ours for $75, since we use them for the Casita keys and other items.
SABRE Advanced Pepper Spray Keychain -$10
This is a nice to have if we’re in a weird area. One of us usually carries a knife as well. Paid $10 for two pink ones since pink was the cheapest option.
Kitchen
Snow Peak Titanium Trek Bowl & Plate – $ Varies
Titanium is going to be the lightest material for dinnerware. We have titanium bowls, plates and silverware. Great for the Casita and for camping in general. Only downside is they retain heat but it’s not a big deal. They used to sell Snow Peak on Amazon but looks like they stopped. You can find titanium dishware all over, I got some from a store that was doing a huge sale.
TOAKS Titanium 750ml Pot – $26
This is a great ultralight pot that can double as a mug.
0.6L Small Electric Kettle (Necessary) – $20
This very small kettle is great for heating water for our coffees. Heats up fast, and we don’t need to wait around for a kettle on the stove.
GSI Outdoors Bugaboo Fry Pan (Necessary) – $27
This pan has a foldable handle, great for storing in the Casita cabinets. It’s non-stick so it’s easy to clean.
CHEFMAN Small, Compact Air Fryer Healthy Cooking, 2 Qt (Necessary) – $50
We use our toaster oven and air fryer at home a lot. Since the Casita doesn’t have an oven, we got this small air fryer to use when we’re plugged in. Great for even just re-heating leftovers.
Clip On Strainer – $10
This eliminates needing a separate strainer.
Titanium Cutlery Set – $18
Super lightweight fork, knife, spoon set.
Bathroom
Composting Toilet
We’re modding the bathroom so we don’t need to use the black tank. The compost toilet is from Separett. It was a big headache trying to get it into the spot the old toilet was in.
Solar
EcoFlow Delta 2 – (Necessary)
We got this unit during Black Friday, they often run good deals. Did a lot of research since there are so many portable power units like this. We could have gone the route of just hooking solar to our battery, but I like the option that we can charge EcoFlow through a wall outlet if we needed. And having the EcoFlow as a backup battery is useful for boondocking. This seemed like a great backup unit for when we’re off-grid and would be able to handle charging some electronics and running our internet gear. For working on the Casita, we’ve use this unit to power all our power tools (circular saw, rotozip, etc.) and didn’t need to recharge the unit at all.
Renogy 400W Foldable Solar Blanket (Necessary) – $600
We bought this on sale during Black Friday (saved about $100 and got cashback through Capital One) after a lot of research. Renogy looked like a reputable brand. We didn’t want a random cheap one from Amazon. Only downside is that it can’t stand on its own, so you need a way to angle it. Weighs about 26lbs and comes in a carrying case. This will charge both our onboard battery and our EcoFlow when boondocking. (Use this referral link, get 6% off)
Bateria Power Solar to XT60i Charge Extension Cable 20FT 12AWG – $36
We needed this to extend the connection from the solar panels to the EcoFlow, so they’re not needing to be right next to each other.
Truck Gear
Dashcam & Rear camera (Necessary) – $400
This dashcam is awesome. We’ve used it to review a lot of close calls. Great peace of mind when being on the road. We spent a ton of time trying to find the right camera and this has held up well for the few years we’ve had it so far.
Leer XR Truck Cap
One of the first big purchases for the Tacoma was a truck cap. We were going to get the R, but ended up with the XR since the way to open the back window was just a little easier (one handle, rather than having to open 2) and the difference at the time was about $50. We’re really happy with the purchase. Some tiny spots leak during heavy rain but nothing crazy. We got the option to add a rack to the top, we plan to add kayak holders. These truck caps aren’t made to hold rooftop tents, but we don’t need that right now.
Prinsu Roof Rack
We got this rack used. Has a nice low profile on the Tacoma, plenty of ways to mount things on it. Mainly using it for kayaks.
Clip-on Trailer Towing Mirror (Necessary) – $70
Didn’t want to spend a fortune on towing mirrors. These clip-on ones held on well during our 2000 mile round trip to pick up the Casita. They don’t shake and provide much better visibility on the sides.
ScanGauge – SG2 II – $140
We mainly got this device for tracking the transmission temperature, to see if we need to pull over to reduce overheating. It has a lot of nice features like a way to track fuel economy and fuel cost for trips. It mounts right on the dash in front of the steering wheel, so it’s not in the way of anything. Very easy to install, just plugs into the OBD2 port.
Car Door Step – $35
This step helps you reach more on the roof. Helpful for tying down things on our roof rack.
Seat Storage Hanging Bag – $9
Nice little bags that hang on the side of the driver and passenger seats. Allows you to put small items like charging cables in them.
5-Gallon Gas Can (Necessary) – $40
You can get cheaper gas cans, but we wanted to get one we knew would not spill or leak. We went through a gas run in Texas years ago where there was no gas for over a week, so it’s nice to have a few gallons as a backup at all times.
Back Car Seat Covers – $35
These covers are great for allowing you to throw stuff on the seats and not worry about them getting dirty. We also have two cats so it helps with keeping hair off the seats. Paid about $35 for it.
Front Car Seat Covers – $23
There are tons of car seat covers out there. We went for a basic set, just to keep the seats from getting dirt.
Mud flaps – $80
We got some plastic mud flaps for each tire. They seem to be working well so far. Installation was a bit weird as we couldn’t get one of the attachments in but they are still holding on. They keep mud and rocks from kicking up and hitting the underside of the truck and from hitting the front of the Casita.
Catalytic Converter Shield – $250
This shield just adds a layer of protection from opportunists looking to steal catalytic converters.
Off-Road Traction Boards with Jack Base – $88
Haven’t needed to use them yet, but like having them in case we’re stuck in a muddy or slippery spot.
Rhino Tire Plug Kit – $30
As soon as we bought this, we had a nail in our tire (turned out it didn’t puncture fully). But we were glad we had this, just in case.
Warning Triangle Set – $17
We have these, just in case we ever need to pull over on the road. These are standard for truckers. Good to have, just to warn people we’re on the roadside.
Rechargeable LED Road Flares Emergency Lights – $20
Wanted to have flares in our roadside emergency kit, but we found these rechargeable ones that would do the same thing. We can pull these out if we’re ever pulled over at night.
Tools
Fiskars Axe – $45
Useful for splitting wood. Fiskars is a reputable brand, didn’t want something that would end up breaking easily.
Folding Survival Shovel – $27
Another piece of gear for emergencies, in case we need to dig the truck or Casita tires out of something.
Dual Drive Breaker Bar, 3/8″ & 1/2″ Drive (Necessary if using WDH) – $20
This breaker bar is for the Anderson weight distribution hitch. It’s for tightening the chains. It’s not ratcheting, but we found we don’t need that feature, this does the job.
Sherman Marson Hand Riveter (Necessary) – $40
This is a highly rated riveter. Haven’t needed to use it yet but it’s a must-have with all the rivets in the Casita.
White Lithium Grease Spray – $7
I’ve seen debates online about needing tow ball grease or not. We got it just in case, as it can be easier to get the coupler to latch onto the ball with the grease if you’re not perfectly lined up.
Folding Saw – $26
Useful little saw for cutting limbs or other wood. Not something you’ll need everyday but happy to have it for when we do need it.
11 in 1 Screwdriver & Nut Driver (Necessary) – $15
This is a great little screwdriver that comes with different bits. Cuts down on needing a bunch of different tools.
Morakniv Garberg Full Tang Fixed Blade Knife – $72
Useful multi-purpose knife for any situation.
Gerber Gear Paraframe II EDC Folding Pocket Knife – $18
Had this knife for a few years. Has a clip to keep it on your pants, so it’s always at hand. It’s come in handy many times.
Recreation
Native Falcon 11 Kayak
Weighs around 60lbs, easy enough for the both of us to put on and off the roof rack.
NRS 1″ Heavy Duty Tie Down Strap 4 Pack (Necessary) – $36
We use these to tie the kayak down to the roof rack. I highly recommend them. We’ve driven on the highway and these tie down straps never loosen.
DRAGONtail Shadowfire 365 12′ Tenkara Fly Fishing Rod
Really excited to try out some tenkara fishing while we’re on the road. This is a good beginner rod from our research.
Coleman Cooler – $290
This is a bit overkill of a cooler, but we got a great deal on it. I also use it on our outdoor table to make a standing desk.
Ugly Stik GX2 Casting Fishing Rod & Abu Garcia Silver Max Low Profile Multi
This is one of my rod and reel sets for bass fishing. I believe it was under $100 for the whole setup.
Floating Fishing Landing Net – $25
Nice lightweight fishing net with rubber netting to prevent hooks getting tangled. It can also float, in case you drop it in the water.
Work Gear
I work remotely, so I need a way to do laptop work and calls. Ideally I can work outside or go to the library, but when I’m in the Casita these are the things I use. When I’m outside, I make a standing desk using our outdoor table with a cooler on top.
Logitech Pebble Keys Keyboard – $38
This wireless, battery-operated keyboard is nice and compact, just what I needed for travel.
Adjustable Laptop Stand – $16
I prefer standing to work. If I’m sitting I still don’t want to be looking down at a screen. This stand is good for smaller laptops, very compact.
Misc.
Large Scale Road Atlas – $25
We haven’t used this yet, but we always find ourselves in areas without cell service. Having a paper map will help in those random times.
Reflectix BP24025 24-Inch by 25-Feet Bubble Pack Insulation – $27
Use this and velcro to make window covers. These are useful for insulating in hot and cold weather. I also like having these to blackout light when needed.
Anker NEBULA Capsule Air TV Projector – $379
We didn’t get a TV in the Casita, knowing we’d just watch things on our laptop or a projector. This little projector is a great size. Useful for inside or outside, and we can play Xbox on it.
Eva-Dry Wireless Mini Dehumidifier – $15
We use these to try to dehumidify the Casita, seems to be useful. You just plug them in once they are “wet”.
Indoor Pan/Tilt Smart Security Camera – $20
We got two of these cameras for our apartment to watch our cats. They’re useful in the Casita too, if we go out and leave the cats inside.
